A Flushing woman is accused of stealing an ambulance in Bay City and taking it on a joyride down Interstate 75.

At about 8:20 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, police responded to McLaren Bay Region Hospital, 1900 Columbus Ave., after staff called to report a Mobile Medical Response ambulance was missing. The driver of the absent Ford Econoline, designated A30, told police he parked it in the garage and left the keys inside.

The driver left the ambulance unlocked and its rear doors open, he said. He went about attending to his duties and when he returned to the garage, he found the ambulance was gone.

“I thought someone was playing a prank on me, but the truck was actually stolen,” he told police, according to their reports contained in court files.

A tracking device on the ambulance showed it was heading south on I-75. Michigan State Police troopers spotted it driving through Buena Vista Township and pulled it over.

Troopers arrested the woman driver, identified as 35-year-old Marissa K. Klein of Flushing. Klein told police she took the ambulance to get back to her Genesee County home, reports state.

Police noted in their reports that Klein made several odd comments in their presence, such as “I have no concept of time” and “I had been driving for eons.” The available reports do not specify if Klein submitted to a preliminary Breathalyzer test or if a sample of her blood was taken for analysis.

Klein on Monday, Aug. 26, appeared in Bay County District Court for arraignment on one count of unlawfully driving away a motor vehicle, a five-year felony. The arraigning judge set her bond at $5,000 cash, which she hasn’t posted as of Tuesday morning.

Klein is to appear for a preliminary examination on Sept. 11 .
