The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a person accused of using an ambulance as a getaway car. According to deputies, they responded to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 around 5 pm Thursday evening for a call about a stolen vehicle.

When they arrived in the area, Deputies say the driver in a stolen ambulance refused to stop for responding law enforcement. The KCSO says they used spike strips several times in attempts to flatten the tires but were unsuccessful. Officials say the driver continued to run from authorities, ultimately driving through the median and near the 100 mile marker began trying to drive the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

Authorities say a deputy had to forcefully use his cruiser to get the ambulance to come to a stop. Officials say the driver was taken into custody. No injuries were reported by any other motorists on the highway,  deputies or the suspect.

The incident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
