Indianapolis police arrested a man after they say he stole an ambulance and drove it on I-65 Downtown.

The incident began about 5:30 a.m. Thursday with a carjacking after an accident on I-70 near Harding Street, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Aaron Hamer said.

“The suspect pulled a gun, kidnapped the victim and then drove off in the victim’s car,” Hamer said. “The suspect proceeded to crash the victim’s vehicle for a second time.”

The suspect flagged down an ambulance near the second crash site at I-65 and West Street, Hamer said.

When the medics stopped, the armed man drove away in the ambulance.

The man stopped the ambulance on the highway a short time later, Hamer said. The man was taken into custody by an officer who stopped to help what he thought were medics in need of assistance.

The medics and the carjacking victim were not injured, Hamer said.
