A suspect accused of stealing a Fort Worth ambulance was shot and killed Thursday morning by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper after leading officers on a wild pursuit through Austin, officials said.

The Fort Worth Fire Department said the ambulance was taken from Station 4 on Wednesday night in the 2900 block of Old Mansfield Road. The department did not provide additional details about the theft.

During a Thursday morning news conference, DPS said troopers were notified at about 6:30 a.m. that the stolen ambulance was traveling southbound on Interstate 35 in Austin. When troopers attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled.

DPS said during the chase, the suspect began “intentionally ramming multiple civilian vehicles,” as it traveled down U.S. 290. Troopers then attempted to pit the ambulance, but were unsuccessful.

DPS said the ambulance continued to ram vehicles as it traveled onto the upper deck of I-35 in the southbound lanes. That’s when a DPS trooper fired their service weapon, striking the suspect.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene

“I came here just to get my daughter a hair appointment,” witness Victoria Daacon said. “The hairstylist was like, ‘Go outside. You can see the ambulance that came out here from Dallas or something.’ It was hitting cars – it was just wild. Mind‑boggling.”

How the ambulance traveled nearly 200 miles without stopping remains unclear.

“It is wild that it took them that long to catch him,” Daacon said.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the officer‑involved shooting.
