A man said he simply “needed a ride” after he stole an ambulance from a psychiatric hospital in the Houston area and drove to KFC, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, who was in his 60s, reportedly stole the ambulance just after midnight from Cypress Creek Hospital in the 17700 block of Cali Drive. Deputies said he was a former patient at the hospital.

The man was being tracked as he drove to several locations, including KFC and other stores to get a drink and cigarettes, deputies said. He eventually stopped at a Chevron at West Richey and Ella, where Harris County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Lynwood Moreau approached him and asked why he stole the vehicle.
