An emergency responder is recovering from minor injuries, and one person is in custody following a violent incident involving an ambulance Sunday afternoon on Interstate 530.
According to Arkansas State Police, the incident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. on I-530 northbound near the Pratt Road exit, approximately seven miles south of downtown Little Rock.
State police said an EASI ambulance crew requested assistance after a person being transported became combative. During the altercation, the individual assaulted crew members, stole the ambulance and left the responders on the side of the Interstate.
Troop E units responded to assist the ambulance crew, while Troop A located the stolen ambulance and stopped the suspect after conducting a tactical vehicle intervention to safely end the pursuit.
Authorities said one crew member was punched multiple times and suffered minor injuries. The crew also reported being threatened with trauma shears during the incident.
Josh Bishop, CEO of EASI Ambulance Service, provided the following statement to Deltaplex News;
“We are so thankful that our providers are safe and not seriously injured. Thank you to ASP and all law enforcement officials that arrested the suspect and recovered the ambulance”, said Bishop. “This is yet another scenario that shows what our public safety professionals deal with on a daily basis. Our EASI Dispatchers did an excellent job getting the crew assistance and working with ASP to quickly find the ambulance.“
The suspect was taken into custody. Additional details, including potential charges, were not immediately released.
