A patient at Hilton Head Medical Center stole an ambulance from the facility on Tuesday, before being stopped and detained by law enforcement, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office officials said.

The woman, reportedly suffering from a mental health-related illness, drove off from the medical center around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the private ambulance while dressed in street clothes, investigators said.

Officials said the ambulance was taken from outside of the emergency room.

BCSO deputies said they were able to stop the ambulance using spike strips near Indian Pipe Lane.

The woman was detained and charges in the case are still pending.
