A Moore County man was arrested Wednesday morning after getting into an unattended ambulance at Randolph Health in Asheboro and driving off with it, officials said.
A crew from Randolph County EMS was taking a patient into the emergency department at Randolph Health on White Oak Street shortly before 5 a.m. when Allen Ulises Morgan, 27, of Eagle Springs, got into the driver’s seat and drove away, the Randolph County Department of Emergency Services said.
Staff immediately reported the incident to law enforcement.
Asheboro Police Department officers saw the ambulance and asked for the sheriff’s office to help with the pursuit as Morgan refused to pull over, the sheriff’s office said.
The pursuit continued south on U.S. 220 Business Alternate and ultimately into Moore County. Multiple agencies assisted in the pursuit, which ended about 6 p.m. at FirstHealth Moore Regional hospital in Pinehurst, where the ambulance wrecked into a hospital sign.
The ambulance had minor damage and was returned to Randolph County, officials said.
Morgan was charged with felony larceny of a motor vehicle, felony possession of stolen motor vehicle, felony fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, misdemeanor driving while license revoked, misdemeanor resisting a public officer, misdemeanor misuse of the 911 system, misdemeanor hit-and-run with property damage, driving the wrong way on a dual-lane highway, failure to maintain lane control and failure to stop for a steady red light. His bond was set at $15,000 secured.
There were no injuries, and no sheriff’s office vehicles were damaged during the pursuit.
