A Goldsboro man was arrested and charged for hijacking an ambulance and ramming it into a police car near UNC Health Wayne Saturday night.
Raul Sergio Sandoval-Moore, 23, of North Carolina Street in Goldsboro, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, careless and reckless driving, driving while license revoked, exceeding posted speed limit and failure to maintain lane control, said LaToya Henry, Goldsboro public information officer.
At about 8:05 p.m. Saturday, Goldsboro police responded to a report of an ambulance being stolen from UNC Health Wayne, at 2700 Wayne Memorial Drive, Henry said.
According to the Goldsboro police accident report, Moore reportedly stole a Wayne County Emergency Medical Services ambulance from the hospital and left by driving north on Wayne Memorial Drive.
Police found the stolen ambulance a short time later driving south on Wayne Memorial Drive near New Hope Road, Henry said.
Moore reportedly jumped the curb near Cox Boulevard and drove through the UNC Primary Care parking lot, at 208 Cox Blvd., according to the report.
Moore then turned right to drive west down a service road in the parking lot.
GPD Sgt. Jason Booker was driving east in his police car on the same road and performed an evasive maneuver to avoid a head-on collision with Moore, the report said.
Moore reportedly turned left, left the roadway and struck Booker’s car intentionally, hitting the rear bumper on the driver’s side, the report said.
Moore stopped the ambulance and was taken into custody without incident, Henry said.
Booker was listed in normal condition after the accident, the report said.
No serious injuries were reported. No signs of alcohol or drugs were suspected.
The crash resulted in $18,000 in estimated damages, including $10,000 for the ambulance and $8,000 for the police car, which is not drivable, according to the report.
Moore was booked in Wayne County jail under a $100,000 bond.
