A Michigan man has been arrested in Green County after he allegedly stole an ambulance and led the Green County Sheriff’s Office on a chase.
GCSO deputies were called around 2:30 a.m. Sunday to the area of State Highway 11 west of County Highway KK in the Town of Monroe after reports of a man sitting on the side of the road.
When deputies found the man, they recognized him from an earlier interaction, and he requested an ambulance for an injury.
After deputies contacted the 911 Communications Center to send an ambulance to the scene, Green County EMS were notified.
While deputies and the suspect waited for EMS response, the suspect walked away from the deputies along the side of the highway.
When the ambulance arrived, GCSO says the suspect ran away from EMS personnel. got into the ambulance, and drove away, heading eastbound on State Highway 11.
The deputies chased the ambulance for around 11.5 miles, reaching speeds of up to 55 mph.
By now, the chase was entering Brodhead, and Brodhead Police attempted to use a tire deflation device near Mt. Hope Road in the Town of Spring Grove.
A tire was deflated on the ambulance, but the suspect kept driving eastbound onto State Highway 81., turning onto Clarence Lane.
When the ambulance became disabled, the suspect drove off of the roadway and jumped out of the ambulance. He allegedly failed to follow commands from law enforcement and ran away into a residential yard.
Law enforcement caught up to the suspect and took him into custody. As the suspect was still refusing to follow commands, a Taser was used to incapacitate him and allow law enforcement to take him into custody.
The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Shannon A. Szukala of Middleville, Michigan, was evaluated at a local hospital before he was taken to the Green County Jail.
He faces charges of operating a motor vehicle without owners consent, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, resisting and obstructing law enforcement, and disorderly conduct.
The ambulance was towed from the scene. No other vehicles were damaged and no injuries were reported.
